2016 Tesla Model X P90DL
A Day in Santa Rosa, NM
Day 14 - Friday, June 10, 2016

These reports and photos are of a road trip from Anaheim, California, to the 2nd Annual Midwest Tesla Gathering in St. Louis, Missouri. My wife and I are doing this trip in our new red 2016 Tesla Model X P90DL. This particular report is of Day 14, a day that we spent in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

Note: This report is a rough draft. I have not yet done a spell check or final edits. Since we are driving this road trip right now, devoting time to driving takes priority. As I get time at our stays along the way I'll make final edits and spelling corrections. But for now, please pardon any errors.

Most of today was spent writing and posting this Tesla travel report from the last couple of days plus getting some of my usual computer work done. This hotel also offers a separate work desk with excellent internet with the option to use either WiFi or wired internet or both (and they also provide the wire).

Annie's Restaurant next to the Hampton Inn.

At about 1 PM we took a break for lunch and walked to a new restaurant next door that had just opened: Annie's Restaurant. The food was inexpensive and good and, as you can see above, the surroudings pleasant.

After lunch we walked to the car and drove to the Route 66 Auto Museum. It turned out it was practically across the street from the Hampton Inn where we were staying so we could have easily walked over.

Route 66 Auto Museum Exterior.

As you can see above, they have a few of the cars on display outside the museum. Inside the front of the museum is a store where you can buy all sorts of Route 66 souvenirs and other auto souveniers. If you want to go in and view the cars you have to pay $5. Even though there are only 30 cars in the museum, I think it is worth the $5 to see them. I'm sure it takes a good amount of funds to maintain the museum and keep the cars looking good.

Photos of the cars in the museum.

Pretty much every car in the museum can be seen in at least one of the above photos. After touring the auto museum we went back to the hotel so that I could get back to writing my travel report and my other work on the computer. At about 7 PM we headed out of the hotel again for dinner. This time we decided to try one of the historic and recommended Route 66 restaurants: Joseph's Bar & Grill.

Historic Route 66 Joseph's Bar & Grill.

Although this place attracts many tourists, it also is a hang out for locals. There is a front restaurant section where a hostess will seat you, or you can just walk into the bar area and seat yourself. We chose to seat ourselves in the bar area. Not only is this restaurant known for its Mexican and American cuisine, as almost every restaurant in town serves, but also for its pizza which is also available for take-out and delivery. The food was pretty good here too. By the time we departed both sections of the restaurant were fairly populated with patrons.

After leaving Joseph's Bar & Grill, just for the heck of it, we decided to stop by the Tesla Supercharger and top off.

At the Santa Rosa Tesla Supercharger.

As we've grown accustomed to, there were no other Tesla vehicles at the Supercharger. We had not seen one here at all during any time we've been here charging or even any time we drove by and glanced in. When we arrived at the Supercharger we already had 221 miles of charge on the battery. Initially the car started charging at a bit over 3 miles per minute. As it got closer to fully charged it slowed down to less than 1 mile per minute. I was curious as to just how high the charge would go before it said charging was completed. Once it got to 247 miles of charge it seemed to stay at that point forever. The battery on the charge display looked full. The volts were still over 400 but the amps had dropped down to about 10. It still said the rate of charge was about 100 miles per hour but it was no longer really charging at even 1 mile per minute. I started to suspect that with us just sitting in the car, using the air conditioning, listening to the radio, and having the display running, that it might be using up electricity as fast as it was being pumped into the car and that the display would never say it was finished charging. Since the battery display looked full anyway at 247 miles of charge and it hadn't changed at all in the last 4 miutes, I figured that was about as high as it was going to go. So, we departed and headed back to the Hampton Inn for the night.
